Think of space and images of rockets, satellites, and distant planets might flash across your mind. But did you know there’s a whole branch of the United States military dedicated to space? They’re called the Space Force, and they play a super important role in our world!
What exactly is the Space Force?
Established in 2019, the Space Force is the youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s like the Air Force, but with a specific focus on everything outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Members of the Space Force are called Guardians.
What do Guardians do?
Imagine space as a giant game board, and the Space Force is there protecting important pieces:
- Satellites: Have you ever used GPS in a car or looked at satellite maps? Those super helpful tools are possible because of satellites. Space Force makes sure these satellites are launched correctly, kept in orbit, and keep working so we can use them.
- Communication: Our ability to talk across the world and access the internet often depends on those satellites. Guardians keep everything running smoothly.
- Spying (the good kind!): They operate special satellites that keep an eye on other countries from space, ensuring the U.S. is safe and aware of what’s happening around the world.
- Protect from Space Junk: All those old satellites and bits of rockets floating in space? It’s a problem! Space Force tracks all that debris to make sure it doesn’t collide with working satellites.
