Virginia is a southeastern U.S. state rich in colonial heritage, Civil War history, and political influence. Known as the “Mother of Presidents,” it’s the birthplace of more U.S. presidents than any other state.

History

Virginia was the site of the first permanent English settlement in America — Jamestown, founded in 1607. It played a central role in the American Revolution, the founding of the nation, and the Civil War. It became the 10th state in 1788 and was once the largest and most populous of the original 13 colonies.
