The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces specializing in expeditionary, amphibious, and rapid-response operations. Established on November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Marine Corps has earned a reputation as the “first to fight” due to its ability to deploy quickly in crises. It operates under the Department of the Navy but remains a distinct and coequal service.

History

The Marine Corps was created to provide shipboard security and amphibious assault forces during the American Revolutionary War. It was re-established in 1798 and has since played a pivotal role in nearly every major U.S. conflict, from the Barbary Wars and Battle of Tripoli Harbor to the World Wars, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the post-9/11 conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

== Mission == The Marine Corps’ mission is to serve as a flexible, expeditionary force in readiness, capable of rapid deployment by land, sea, or air. It is tasked with:

Amphibious assaults and securing beachheads.

Rapid crisis response.

Combined-arms and special operations.

Support of naval campaigns.

Humanitarian and disaster relief.


Organization

The USMC is organized into:

Operating Forces – Marine Air-Ground Task Forces (MAGTFs), composed of ground, aviation, and logistics elements.

Supporting Establishment – training bases, logistics, and supply commands.

Marine Corps Reserve – part-time Marines who augment active forces.


Leadership

The Corps is led by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, a four-star general who reports to the Secretary of the Navy and is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Personnel

Marines undergo recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island or Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Officer training takes place at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, or the United States Naval Academy.

Equipment

The Marine Corps operates amphibious assault vehicles, light armored vehicles, tanks, artillery, attack helicopters (AH-1Z Viper), and fighter aircraft such as the F/A-18 Hornet and F-35B Lightning II.

Special Operations

Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) oversees elite Marine Raiders, who conduct counterterrorism, reconnaissance, and direct action missions.
